I saw Neal Stephenson speak in Pittsburgh a few years ago (during the tour for Fall) and when asked what he was reading, he mentioned this book, about Richard Nixon discovering that the office of the Presidency also includes protecting it from unspeakable cosmic horrors. Funny but also not. It’s fun to remember when we saw the American presidency as an office worthy of admiration.
